Horror University: World Building for Horror Writers
Worldbuilding is most often associated with genres like science-fiction and fantasy, but it is also a critical skill for horror writers. The process of building imaginary worlds and settings associated with a fictional universe is important to fully immerse readers into your story—and the horror elements that it contains. Writers need to learn how to build a cohesive universe with history, culture, geography. This becomes even more true when we introduce supernatural elements into our stories. Learn the foundations and keys to worldbuilding in this Horror University workshop.

JENNIFER BRODY (a/k/a VERA STRANGE) is the author of the "Disney Chills" book series, "The 13th Continuum" trilogy, and "Spectre Deep 6," which was a Stoker Finalist for "Best Graphic Novel" prompting Forbes to call her “a star in the graphic novel world.” She is the co-author of "All is Found: A Frozen Anthology" and "Star Wars: Stories of Jedi & Sith," where she penned the Darth Vader story. She’s a graduate of Harvard University, a film/TV producer and writer, and a creative writing instructor. She began her career in Hollywood working for A-List directors and movie studios on many films, including "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Golden Compass," "Freddy vs. Jason" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Her forthcoming stories will appear in "Weird Tales" and among other anthologies, while her forthcoming series "A Sacrifice of Blood & Stars" sold in a 3-book deal and debuts in Fall 2024. She lives and writes in Joshua Tree, California.

Horror University: Catch the Reader by Surprise
Horror is the genre of the unexpected, and the best thrills of the genre come to us as surprises, revelations, and shocks. This two hour workshop will cover insider tricks and tactics for surprising even the most jaded horror reader. It will include a lively interactive talk that explores how to set traps that will catch your audience by surprise. By examining examples and practicing in class, you’ll learn how to employ your cunning to stun your reader and build tension, and to better exploit turning points in your plots to generate powerful twists and shocking outcomes.

Amityville-born horror writer Michael Arnzen holds four Bram Stoker Awards and an International Horror Guild Award for his often funny, always disturbing fiction and poetry. Always experimenting, Arnzen's work in the genre has appeared in everything from poetry magnets (Fridge of the Damned) to Palm Pilots (Gorelets) to playing cards (Play Dead) to moving pictures (Exquisite Corpse). Learn the latest on his website: http://gorelets.com

Arnzen holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Oregon and since 1999 has taught fulltime at Seton Hill University, near Pittsburgh, in their MFA program in Writing Popular Fiction. He has published a helpful collection of "story starters" for dark fiction authors called Instigation: Creative Prompts on the Dark Side, and co-edited the book, Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction. He has taught genre authors at StokerCon, Odyssey, Alpha, World Horror Con and many other venues, in addition to appearing in the HWA's classic On Writing Horror anthology (Writer's Digest).

You must preregister for this workshop. Please use to following link to register for Horror University workshops:  https://horror-university.teachable.com/courses/category/stokercon-2024.
